About the SCRIBE Researchers
SCRIBE is a team of researchers studying social interaction in virtual worlds. We are:
Rosa Mikeal Martey (Lead Researcher) - Martey is an Assistant Professor at Colorado State University in the Department of Journalism & Technical Communication. She received her PhD. from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on social interaction in online contexts. Her main is a troll resto shaman on a PvP server, slowly creeping towards that 385 i-level.

Jennifer Stromer-Galley (Lead Researcher) - Jennifer Stromer-Galley is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at the University at Albany, SUNY. She holds a Ph.D. from the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania. She publishes on the uses and effects of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for democratic processes and social interaction.
Mia Consalvo (Lead Researcher) - Mia Consalvo is Canada Research Chair in Game Studies and Design at Concordia University in Montreal. She is the author of Cheating: Gaining Advantage in Video games, and is currently writing a book about Japan's influence on the video game industry and game culture. She has held positions at MIT, Ohio University, Chubu University in Japan and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Kelly Reene (Lead Researcher) - Kelly Reene, based at Lockheed Martin, has primarily focused on decision analysis, testing and verification of software systems, and business and business case development. Her academic focus has been in the areas of social and cognitive development.
Tomek Strzalkowski (Lead Researcher) - Tomek Strzalkowski is Director of the Institute for Informatics, Logics and Security Studies and Professor of Computer Science at SUNY Albany. Prior to joining SUNY, he was a Natural Language Group Leader and a Principal Scientist at GE R&D. He has done research in computational linguistics, socio-linguistics, information retrieval, question-answering, human-computer dialogue, and formal semantics of natural language.
Michelle Weihmann-Purcell (Lead Researcher) - Michelle Weihmann-Purcell is a Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin IS&GS. During the last 7 years she has led internal research and development projects related to semantic data integration and data analysis using multi-touch and 3D visualization software.
Jingsi Christina Wu (Postdoctoral Researcher) - Dr. Wu received her PhD from the joint program of Sociology and Communication at University at Albany-SUNY. Her research focuses on the role of new media in civic engagement. Her Blood Elf mage is getting close to 85... but not quite yet.
Jaime Banks (Senior Research Assistant) - Jaime Banks is a PhD candidate in the Department of Journalism & Technical Communication at Colorado State University. She is currently working on the AMPER project that explores how humans and technology relate to one another by understanding how players and their characters are connected. Her main toon is a Forsaken Hunter (For the Horde!) on a PvP realm.
Daniela Castillo (Research Assistant) - Daniela Castillo has been teaching interactive design and multimedia in California, Colorado, and Mexico for the past 10 years. During this time she also worked for the video game industry and as a free-lance interactive designer. Dani is pursuing her PhD in Public Communication & Technology at CSU with a focus on games and education.
Steve Lovaas (Research Assistant, programming & security) - Steve Lovaas is the IT Security Manager for Colorado State University. He holds a Masters in Information Assurance from Norwich University, and is pursuing a PhD in Communication at CSU. He has authored chapters for the Computer Security Handbook, and his academic research focuses on the ways in which people understand and interact with online threats and defenses. His main is a BE priest.
Zumrut Akcam (Research Scientist) - Dr. Akcam is a programmer and researcher at the Institute for Informatics, Logics and Security Studies (ILS) at the University at Albany-SUNY. She works in a variety of programming languages and is lead programmer on SCRIBE support tools.
Other Research Assistants
Additional researchers on the project help out with programming, coding, data analysis, running sessions, scheduling, and participant communication.
Greg Russell, Scott Hawks, and Jessica Vyvial are all current and former graduate and undergraduate students at Colorado State University in the department of Journalism & Technical Communication.
At the University at Albany-SUNY, graduate and undergraduate research assistants include Ken Stahl, Emily Fiorini, Ryan Leavens, Hino Reyes, and Tobias Killian.
This is an academic study conducted by the University at Albany, Colorado State University, and the Air Force Research Labs according to Federal guidelines. Participating in this study is voluntary and open to those 18 and over only. This research is Federally funded, and NOT affiliated with Blizzard, Inc.
